High Maintenance
Lash Extensions

The process of bonding synthetic hairs onto your real lashes is now widley available at salons and spas. "Lash extensions are great because you don't need mascara and they last up to six weeks before requiring a touch-up," says Lysa Kustek, owner of L.A.'s Le Petite Retreat day spa. You'll need about two hours and at least $300. Be Sure to explain the look you want. A natural style uses 8 to 14-millimeter lashes all over, but a flared effect calls for even longer ones at the ends.

Le Petite Retreat day spa

This spa is famous for the massage package for two in the couples' cabana (60 minutes, $150 each). Individual bungalows are draped in green and white striped fabric - part Hampton's preppy, part Fijian hut. The French Polynesian-inspired interior goes perfectly with the overgrown garden.

The Bestseller:
Colorscience Face Colore mineral Makeup SPF20
A water-resistant mineral powder foundation built into a brush that's easy to carry around - the SPF is an added bonus.

Best of Los Angeles
Spa Bath

Anyone who can afford $50 for an afternoon soak in scented water probably has a decent bathroom of his or her own. Yet aromatherapy baths remain a staple on spa menus, perhaps because there's no phone or offspring just outside the door. We like a dip in Le Petite Retreat's ergonomic copper tub - big enough for two tall people, with a hump on the floor for leg elevation.

"We'd booked the spa's Tree of Mauritius Massage, a deep-tissue rub favored by Brooke Shields, because prissy strokes don't do a thing for our knot-riddled shoulders. When we accepted [spa therapist Krista] Gardner's offer of an optional 'foot Shiatsu,' she climbed onto our massage table . . . [and] walked along our back. Gardner only weighed about 100 pounds, but when she leapt off, our shoulders felt far, far lighter."
